Telkom has the experience and capability to be the network provider of choice to government, having successfully delivered national and international events and solutions of enormous sophistication.

Unerring focus

Given the stringent demands placed on government, individual departments and other organs of state, at national, provincial and local level, must focus unerringly on their business – the efficient and effective delivery of services to the public.

This focus and efficiency can be achieved by building relationships with trusted advisors, in effect freeing up operational resources by leaving non-core functions such as ICT in the hands of market-leading specialists.

TELKOM GOVERNMENT SALES – VISION AND MISSION

The Vision of the Telkom Government Sales Division is to be a leading ICT business partner to all three spheres of the government - national, provincial and local. Our Mission is to prepare all government departments for the information age through the deployment of converged, Internet, mobile and broadband solutions.

Because of ongoing regulatory changes, the market is flooded with companies all promising to deliver top-notch ICT solutions. But government decisionmakers must ensure they do not come to rue short-term decisions. They must adopt solutions that benefit their departments in the long term, make optimal use of public funds and advance the interests of all citizens Telkom Government Sales is well positioned to be a trusted ICT partner to government, with solutions that answer to all these requirements. For one thing, we have invested extensively in business as well as technical training for our sales team, to ensure they are sufficiently equipped to be advisers to government.

Proven solutions

During the past year, Telkom has proved that we can successfully provide sophisticated solutions that enable efficient government service delivery. 2009 elections

NETWORK OF CHOICE

Telkom also has the infrastructural capability to be the network of choice for government ICT service delivery.

• We have invested significantly in a national next-generation network (NGN) with fixed mobile convergence (FMC) capabilities. This has substantially increased the capacity and reliability of our network, as well as our ability to get innovative network-based solutions to market faster.
• We support our solutions with exhaustive service level agreements (SLAs), giving customers the peace of mind they need to stay focused on their core business.
• We remain committed to taking our services to rural communities within achievable time frames, using collaboration and complementary business models to deliver solutions in a cost-effective manner.
By harnessing the power of ICT, and leveraging our ubiquitous network, we can bring government services closer to the people in far-flung areas, in the most cost-effective manner.

One visible example of this is our relationship with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). Every five years, Telkom provides the backbone infrastructure to the IEC’s national results centre in Pretoria and its satellite offices across the country.

eg9telkomnetwork2For the 2009 elections we upgraded IEC infrastructure to accommodate a growth in voter numbers. We provided over 300 VPN lines and 70 VSAT lines, connecting 300 municipal elections offices.

For the centre itself, tasked among other things with providing minute-by-minute results updates, we provided two 25 Mbps VPN circuits.

We further provided the SABC with a 60Mbps video broadcasting linkage, enabling a content feed to its headquarters in Auckland Park. The local and international press used 15 of our ADSL lines and more than 600 telephone line extensions.

2009 and 2010 FIFA broadcasts The managed national communication network that Telkom has built in the past few years has ensured that South Africa can beam the best-quality, high-definition broadcast signals across the globe in 2010, as it did in June 2009. This network interconnects all crucial FIFA event venues: the ten host stadiums, media centres, the international broadcast centre, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and FIFA offices – locally and abroad.

eg9telkomnetwork3 The basic building block of Telkom’s network is optic fibre, which sends and receives top-quality signals at the speed of light and is the critical success factor for high-definition television. Telkom has approximately 120 000 kilometres of optic fibre in the ground - more than enough to support the massive amounts of bandwidth that FIFA and the media will need in 2010.

At each World Cup stadium, Telkom is providing 40 gigabytes of bandwidth – 20GB of active network bandwidth, for use during matches, and 20GB for failover or backup.

Telkom is also providing the backbone infrastructure that will link the ten stadiums to the international broadcast centre (IBC) in Johannesburg. The IBC, which will host an estimated 13 000 media representatives, will be the hub that provides feeds from the stadiums and converts them into digital signals that will be sent out nationwide and internationally.

Track record of success

Telkom has the experience and capability to be the network provider of choice to government, having successfully delivered national and international events, as well as solutions of enormous sophistication.

Working together, we can bring government services closer to the people.
